In Genesis 22, Isaac carries the wood up the mountain, submits to being bound, and lies on the altar — yet his obedience is not what saves him. God intervenes.
This passage points us forward to Jesus, the true and better Isaac. Unlike Isaac, Jesus carries the wood all the way. God does not stop His hand. Jesus becomes the sacrifice we could never be, fully and finally paying the debt of sin.
So why do so many of us keep trying to add our own sacrifices?
In this message, we explore how we often try to manage God through bartering, guilt, shame, and control — and how the gospel frees us from carrying burdens we were never meant to bear. Because Jesus has already carried the weight, we are free to stop striving and start living as people who belong to Him.
Big Idea:
Stop carrying the wood. Start carrying the good news of the gospel.
Scripture:
Genesis 22:6–12
Micah 6:6–8
Romans 8:32
Hebrews 9:14
If you’ve been trying to earn God’s favor, pay Him back, or fix yourself — this message is for you. Jesus is not asking for another sacrifice. He’s asking you to trust the one He already made.
